You'll make sure to bring more men the second time.Īnd thats basically it, recruit units then take tiles that give you income. Though they make up for it in other ways, as everyone finds out after trying to dig a few Dwarves out of their holes. Some will wage their wars to secure certain tiles for things like Fungi and Dwarves are even forced to live in mines with income penalties for other tiles. Some factions are Heavily dependent on Gems, some Sacrifices, others Gold and Iron. Then you choose one of the Factions, each having different resources they need to fuel their wars. Depending on which Age you choose it will effect your map generation, it is on random as default. Dark Ages, Agricultural, Empire, Fallen Empire, Monarchy, Dawn of a New Empire. This doesnt take anything away though, it is the reason they are two different games that seem so similar.Ĭonquest of Elysium is a turn based strategy fantasy where you start in one of the "ages", of which there are 6. Whereas Dominions 5 can be challenging for even the greatest among us to simply play let alone win. Infact Conquest of Elysium could be played by just about anyone. Conquest of Elysium is a much less daunting task to play. You will also notice the games have the same basic idea, raise an army and conquer Elysium. Many of the same Civilizations and units will appear in your games. The first thing you'll notice if you play both is that they have a lot in common. Ill try to sum up the biggest differences. The drawback is a large need of microgestion, which is almost absent in COE serie.Īfter playing Dominions 5 for nearly 300hrs (Honestly not a lot for a game like this with such an Epic Scale), I got Conquest of Elysium 5 and have played it for a little over 100hrs. And far more and earlier interactions between nations, and less imbalance factors making it more suited for MP (which has a large community). You get far larger control, with a deep magical research system, ability to script your troops and mages for battle (if you still have no direct control during them), to forge magical items instead of just gaining them as loot, etc. Also it's not very suited for multiplayer as balance was everything but their priority and the power of indie forces lead to a long developpement phase where players don't interact (if some do play MP). It's an excellent game if you accept this minimalistic control, and need to regularly adapt to random factors, but not everyone's cup of tea because of that. The almost only things you control is what soldiers you recruit, how you group and where you move your units (and even recruitment is very random, as leaders/good units availability is rarely guaranteed). If you like having very limited control, chose COE4, if you are more a control freak Dominions.ĬOE4 charm only speaks to some players, those who don't mind having no control on battles resolution, ultra powerful random events and strong indie stacks randomly moving that may completely change the course of a game, factions more diverse than balanced, etc.
